Complete IELTS Exam Guide
Everything you need to know about the IELTS exam, from test format to scoring and preparation strategies.

What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to assess the language ability of people who want to study or work where English is the language of communication.
IELTS offers two test versions: Academic (for higher education) and General Training (for work, migration, or secondary education). The Listening and Speaking sections are the same for both, but Reading and Writing differ in content and difficulty.
IELTS is recognized by over 11,000 organizations worldwide, including universities, employers, professional bodies, and immigration authorities in English-speaking countries.
IELTS results are reported on a 9-band scale, with each band corresponding to a level of English competence. Your overall band score is the average of your scores in the four test components.
Test Format
The IELTS test consists of four components: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
Listening (30 minutes)
The Listening test consists of 40 questions. There are four sections, each with 10 questions. The first two sections deal with everyday social situations, while the last two sections deal with educational or training contexts.
Question Types:
- Multiple choice
- Matching
- Plan/map/diagram labeling
- Form completion
- Note completion
- Table completion
- Flow-chart completion
- Summary completion
- Sentence completion
- Short-answer questions
You will hear the recording only once. You will be given time to read the questions before you listen and to check your answers afterward.

Scoring System
Understanding how IELTS is scored can help you prepare more effectively.
IELTS results are reported as band scores on a scale from 1 (the lowest) to 9 (the highest). You can score whole bands (e.g., 6.0, 7.0) or half bands (e.g., 6.5, 7.5).
Band Score | Skill Level |

8 | Very good user |
7 | Good user |
6 | Competent user |
5 | Modest user |
4 | Limited user |
3 | Extremely limited user |
